How to store and care for old photos
Most of the damage we repair could have been prevented. Here’s how to keep your originals safe.
Keep them cool, dark and dry
Heat, light and humidity cause fading, yellowing and mould. Store photos inside the house, such as in a wardrobe, not in a garage, shed or roof space.
Use the right storage
Use acid-free boxes and sleeves labelled “archival” or “PAT passed”. Avoid:
- sticky “magnetic” albums
- soft PVC plastic sleeves (they smell of plastic)
- rubber bands, paper clips and tape
Get them out of magnetic albums
If a photo lifts off easily, move it to an archival album or box. If it’s stuck, leave it. Forcing it will tear it.
Handle with care
- Hold photos by the edges, with clean, dry hands.
- Write names and dates on the back in soft pencil, not pen.
- Don’t stack loose photos face to face for years. They can stick together.
Display copies, not originals
Sunlight fades a framed photo within years. Frame a reprint and keep the original stored away.
Protect against water
Store boxes off the floor and away from outside walls. In a flood-prone area, keep them in lidded plastic tubs on a high shelf.
Make digital copies
Scan or photograph your most important photos and keep copies in two places, such as cloud storage and a USB drive. Share them with family.
